Press Release Tools for Small Business

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

press release tools for small businessSmall business marketers used to pay little attention to the press release as a marketing tool – it was a tool for the big boys who had the budgets to hire public relations firms.

Like everything else these days, the web has changed that. Small business owners and marketers can now put their news directly in front of their customers and prospects with online press release creation and distribution tools. Below are some of my favorite tools for creating and distributing press releases.

Instant Press Release – this tool from Duct Tape Marketing gives you a guided template for creating and formatting your press release properly.

Once you create your press release, it’s time to distribute it. New sites and services for distributing press releases are popping up every day. Here are a few of my favorites:

PRWeb – distributes your release to every major news site and search engine on the Web.PRWeb has a variety of pricing plans to meet your needs.

PRLog – a nice, free, press release distribution site. I experienced good search engine results with press releases I’ve posted on prlog.

PitchEngine – Combine the press release with images, video, and social networking tools and instead of a press release you have a one-page website to tell your story.

Pressitt – Another social media news release tool. Nice free way to distribute press releases that get picked up on social sites.

Use these tools to get your message out, get links back to your website, and earn trust – and more PR!

PitchEngine Announces Pay-Per-Pitch

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

pitchengine

PitchEngine, the social PR platform created by Jason Kintzler, recently announced their new “Pay-Per-Pitch” plan. Now you can create and distribute your pitch for only $29.

Prior to the announcement, PitchEngine had provided a free account and a subscription account. The free account allows you to have one live pitch at a time and free pitches expire after 30 days.

The subscription model allows you to create an unlimited number of pitches that live forever on the PitchEngine site. The subscription model price is $39 per month. If you opt to pay for a year’s subscription up front you receive one month’s service free (pay for 11 months, get 12). You can upgrade or downgrade your account at anytime, however, you will not receive a refund.

You can also purchase add-ons that allow you to easily share your newsroom on your website or Facebook page.

Regular readers of this blog know that I and other members of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant network believe PR should be a part of your marketing system and we have been talking about PitchEngine in our Social Media Pro course for quite some time now. While I think this new pay-per-pitch model is a great way for professional service firms to dip their toes in the water and learn more about PitchEngine, most of you will want to create pitches on a consistent basis so upgrading to the monthly subscription for an extra $10 is a “no brainer”.

Tools For Creating Press Releases

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Public Relations (PR) can be a great lead generation tool for small business owners. PR is more credible than advertising. It is generally more cost effective than advertising as well. Stories about your company in the media also improves your image in the eyes of your existing customers as well as your employees. PR should be in every small business owners Lead Generation Trio mix.

A well crafted press release is a key tool in your PR toolbox. Here are a couple of free services that will help you to create effective press releases:

  • Instant Press Release – from Duct Tape Marketing, this tool will help you create a perfectly formatted press release in a matter of minutes.
  • PressRelease Grader – from the folks at HubSpot, this tool evaluates your press release to determine it’s marketing effectiveness. It’s like having an experienced press release writer edit your release before you send it out. Great tool!

Press releases are no longer for just the “big companies”. Use these two tools to add PR to your marketing mix and attract more of your ideal customers.

The Power of the Press Release

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

This recent article in Website magazine lists their top 5 reasons to write a Press Release as:

  1. a way to generate organic traffic
  2. link building
  3. reputation management
  4. attracting bloggers and web 2.0 audience
  5. draw traffic from traditional media

Granted this is a magazine about web sites, but there is one huge benefit missing from this list – the power of having your story told by another person.

Actually, there are two benefits in the sentence above. The first is the power of the story. We all want our marketing messages to be remembered and using a story is one of the more powerful ways of conveying your message and having people remember it. People love stories, so use them in your marketing.

Second is the power of having your story told by someone else. I can create marketing materials all day long that tell you how wonderful my company is – how I have "great customer service", etc. My message will never be as powerful as the story of someone experiencing my customer service, who I was able to help when they were really feeling desperate and we were able to pull off the job in the nick of time. Now have a newspaper or magazine print that story and it becomes an even more powerful tool for creating "Know, Like, and Trust".

Don’t dismiss press releases as tools that are only for the big companies – they are a powerful tool that can help small business owners attract more customers and make a few more trips to the bank.
