Learn about health care reform – KC area

Miami County Small Business Development Workshops

Do you have a business in Miami County, KS?

The Miami County Economic Development Department has teamed up with Fort Scott Community College (Paola campus) to provide 5 Small Business Development Workshops this summer.

Most businesses are eligible for a scholarship that will cover 75% of the costs of these workshops. The scholarship is part of the $35,000 USDA grant recently received by Miami County. To determine if you are eligible, you should contact Janet McRae, Economic Development Director of Miami County, Kansas. You can contact Janet at (913) 294-4045.

Kansas City Marketing Coach and Estate Planning Attorney Network Provide Social Media Training

Rebar Business Builders recently teamed up with the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys to provide social media marketing training for the network's members.

Jan 23, 2010 – Rebar Business Builders has recently teamed up with the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys (NNEPA) to provide social media marketing training to over 40 of the network’s members.
While the program is based on the Social Media Pro program from Duct Tape Marketing, it is being tailored to meet the specific needs of the NNEPA members.

“We wanted a program that did more than just teach best practices for social media marketing” said Rick Randall President and CEO of NNEPA, “We also wanted to create a forum to discuss the issues and nuances of social media marketing particular to the members of our network.”

During this is a five week program, NNEPA members will learn best practices for creating a social media marketing system. Each week of the program, participants receive an new set of lessons for that week. Each lesson includes:  

  • A video presentation
  • a PDF presentation and video transcript
  • Action steps
  • Resources for each step
  • Supplemental videos to guide you through the action steps

Lesson topics include creating a social media marketing strategy, optimizing online brand assets, blogging for business, and using social networking to grow their practice. The final lesson covers “managing the beast” – best practices for creating a system to manage social media activities without having it turn into a full time job.

To help their members get the most from this training, the network created a dedicated internal email list to allow members to discuss questions and bring up issues in real time. NNEPA also has several working groups that members use to collaborate, share their experiences, and provide accountability. These groups will also be used during the program.  

Members of the network also meet once a week via conference call to discuss the lessons they have learned and to receive a preview of what they will learn in the coming weeks lesson.

Social Media Article In Kansas City Thinking Bigger Guide

The folks at Thinking Bigger Business Media recently published their Thinking Bigger Guide for KC Entrepreneurs. They were kind enough to ask me to contribute an article about social media for small business. I can't find an online version to link to, but if you have a copy, it's on page 66 of the guide. I'm always looking for feedback to help me become a better writer, so let me know what you think – I can take it<g>.

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009

This year's Globabl Entrepreneurship Week is almost here! From 16 – 22 November 2009, Global Entrepreneurship Week will connect young people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. Students, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees, non-profit leaders, government officials and many others will participate in a range of activities, from online to face-to-face, and from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings.

Countries across six continents participate in Global Entrepreneurship Week. Here in the Kansas City area, the largest event related to Global Entrepreneurship week is the Small Business Expo sponsored by SHBC. My partner in social media crime, I mean marketing, Bethany Spilde is one of the event speakers. Also featured is Dan Stalp, who you have probably heard me mention once or twice as a great sales coach.

The expo will be held on November 19th and admission is free. Visit the expo web site to see who else is speaking and exhibiting.
